Finished

It's a good thing I don't belive in omens of bad things to come, because Saturday morning we had plenty. I was awoken (grammar check please, Bart) at 4AM by a great deal of thunder and lightning. HAlf an hour later, and not able to get back to sleep, I checked the internet and was able to download this radar image from wunderground.com before our power went out (Strike 1). Apparently the power was out for seven hours, as evidenced by the melted ice cream in the freezer, before it was restored.

Radar

Strike 2? My polar watch died and of course on the day before the race. Strike 3? So did my dishwasher. And with it's last sputtering breathe it decided to regurgitate all the water that it had been clogged with, completed with bits and pieces of salmon, beneath our kitchen floor boards. Yummy. As J eloquently stated, "That's three. You're finished." I was optimistic that he was correct.

J, Whitney and I loaded up the Tahoe, made a quick stop by Bikesport to pick up my bike after a fine tuning-and a new Polar watch- and we were on our way to Galveston. The drive down to Galveston was a lot like every drive out of Houston J has recently described on his blog...torrential rains. I could not believe that a sprint triathlon could be taking place in such weather, but a friend later told me that one lady finished the run with her goggles on. The rain began to disappate and the winds died down and I began to think that we might actually be able to have a weather-free race on our hands.

I kept the night pretty calm. Made some last minute tweaks, nothing major, to the bike, watched some Jackass 2 and hit the hay at 10:30.

Race Day Rig

Fast forward to race morning. Our gracious hosts, the Muecks, let us stay at their bayside home in Lafitte's Cove. Charming family. I woke up one hour late as they, understandably, had not yet changed all the clocks to Daylight Savings time. Arriving to transition, everything was very professionally set up. The wind was howling. I threw everything into place in transition, made a "pit stop" and headed down to the bay for the race start.

Setting up

As I entered the water the winds had calmed but my heart rate had elevated in its place. Boom!

The swim was rather uneventful. I was unable to find the feet of anyone that could (a) keep a steady pace and (b) accurately sight through the open water so I elected to pave my own path past all the turn buoys. As soon as I made this decion three guys hopped on my feet and I pulled them for what I estimate to be 1,200 meters or so. I exited the swim stripped the wetsuit and was into T1.

My bike was racked right near the entrance and alongside the railing. I dumped my wetsuit, put on my helmet and sunglasses, stowed my third bottle in my pocket, gave a waive goodbye and an "I love you" to Whitney and was off.

T1 Exit

I made my way out of the Moody Gardens campus and onto the seawall. WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! The wind was stiff in our face out of the southeast at easily 10 knots. The road to the turnaround was slow but it was steady. People were blowing by me every so often but I figured I would likely see half of them later. At one point I noticed a large fella was riding his tri bike in the road position (hands on the brakes, not in the aero position) and was happily enjoying the draft behind me. I don't like giving people free rides and after being drafted in the swim, I didn't want to be drafted again, even legally, by someone unwilling to swap pulls. After about 13-15 minutes, I decided to pick up the pace by about 10-15% to see if he would try to stick around to benefit and hang in the draft behind me.

235 watts for one minute. That is a significant power output for the typical age grouper for even one minute. He was still there. I turned around and said, "Are you going to come up here and pull or are you just going to fuck me all day?" He sorted of tilted his head "OK then" and came out in front. I got legal (three bike lengths behind him) and he was visibily fighting very hard to keep the same speed we had been. I left him at the turn around and never saw him again.

At the turnaround, 15mph turned to 25mph. By the time I hit the second loop of the bike course the wind had picked up and I was doing 14mph outbound and 27mph on the way back in. I saw many cyclists in the last leg of the bike that had powered by me earlier in the bike course. I was happy that my PowerTap had kept things in check for me in terms of effort. My heart rate was way high from the swim until about mile 12. And the wind was denying me any chance of relying on speed to determine my efforts. It is clear the PT was the best investment I made all season.

I told myself I wouldn't look at my clock on the bike until I reached T2. I clicked over from Cadence to Clock on my PT and it read 2:42:30 as I entered transition. I had beaten my goal by almost ten mintues. Whoa.

I headed out onto the run course and hoped for the best. With chronic Achilles tendonitis, I hadn't run over 3 miles at one time in over a month. Tons of water jogging though. I sailed through the first mile in 6:59. I ran the second mile in 8:20 and felt I had backed off and settled into a really nice pace. Now it was just a matter of time before the fatigue would set in. I had planned my nutrition very precisely and had not knocked it out so far. I was anxious to complete the race.

The run was two loops of 6.55 miles each to make 13.1 miles. It was nice because the course was very spectator friendly and the course was lined with people cheering me on. It's always amazing to me how complete strangers will scream at the top of their lungs to help me. Good to see the better side of humanity. Anyway, I was able to see Whitney and her parents three or four times per loop so that was obviously very helpful for mental status.

By mile 7 I was able to say "two more loops" to myself, recalling the three mile loops at Memorial Park. As I have trained there so often, I pretty much gage (sp?) all running workouts by what multiple of three miles they are. While saying "only two more loops" was a nice notion in my head, I was beginning to really feel the effects of the day. The wind had beaten me up mentally on the bike and, accordingly, I had little, but still some, mental strength left in me. I was just ready to sit. I passed Whitney and her parents at 10 miles and I stopped to give Whitney a kiss and to say, "three more miles."

Three more miles

It was a long three miles. My legs were tired but my Achilles was killing me. Every step with my right foot felt like my Achilles was being stretched over something stiff and bumpy. I could feel the it getting tighter and tighter with every minute. But as I looked down with 1.5 miles to go or so I realized I might break 5:30:00. This was when I finally I reached the point where the fatigue wore off and the adrenaline of reaching the finish line kicked in. It was a very sweet trot to the finishing shoot. I saw Harris was spotting for me as the girls had moved closer to the finish line. I waived to him and turned for the line.

I had thought a lot about how I might feel. Would I cry? Would I smile? Would I collapse? Would I jump? I didn't know. What I forgot about racing is that if you do it right, you don't have much left in your tank at the end. And I certainly didn't. I simply ran, crossed the line and sat down to breathe and to pray.

I thanked God for everything: for keeping me safe, for giving me the strength to train every week and to race, for Justin for his insight, guidance and most of all patience, for all of the volunteers, and lastly, and yes most importantly, for Whitney and all of her love and support.

Finished

I walked out of the finishers' corral and gave Whitney a huge hug and kiss and spent the rest of the day talking about the race with friends, family and even strngers. I am little sore today and the swelling in my right Achilles has made it look like I have a cankle. Sweet.

So now it is time to shift gears to help Whitney train for her own race. I will take a week or so off hard training to rest the heel and to fatten up to 178-180 or so. Let's hope it takes more than just a week. See you all soon!

Yo.

Morning Swim:
200 easy swim
200 kick
8 x 25 every other fast
Main set
6 x 100 on 2:00 with every one under 1:20
200 c/d

The 6 100's were without clock. The Y has not gone through two timing clocks and a wall clock. Wall clock you ask? Yes, the lifeguard pulled one down from the shack today and put it down next to my lane. The last 100 was 1:15. That was probably the slowest one I did. Interesting. I was exhausted. I swam hard and counted out the rest guessing I was swimming 1:18's

Now, the last 200 cool down I tried to swim easy pace, like the pace I would swim comfortably for all 1.4 miles of the swim Sunday.

1:20
1:25

Wow. That's quick for me.

Oh and what happened to the wall clock? Lifeguard kicked it in the pool when I was leaving. Doneski.

I am getting better, finally, at remembering my sets without having to write them down. And consequently, remembering how they went. I wore a drag suit today. Thursday of last week I didn't. For me that means 2-3 seconds per 100m. Sooo that means I was happy with today's results but they might have taken a boit too much effort for race week. I'll be smarter Thursday and either adjust my target times by 2-3 seconds or just forget the drag suit.

Main set:
1:10 (whoa, there)

1:16
1:15

Those were tough today. For some reason I didn't have too much pep this morning. Drank lots of water yesterday, probably didn't eat enough for dinner last night.

Weight was 175.6 this AM.

Day 1 of Race Week:
30 minutes of long, deep stretching at the Y.

Sunday, March 25, 2007

Sunday, March 25th

I probably shouldn't have eaten that Maexican food last night...

I rode 1 hour today instead of 1.5 hours. I kept finding myself well above 100, even 150 watts. Not where I was supposed to be. So I cut it short.

I didn't run yesterday but my Achilles is very very tight this morning. And I don't know why. I did a great deal of stretching yesterday. Anyway I am planning two thirty minute massages this week to focus on _nothing_ but below the knees in each leg.

Here's to the last week...

Morning Water Jog:
8 x 2 min at 90-95 cadence on 1 min recos

Evening Swim:

200 easy
8 x 25 every other fast on 20 sec rest
100 kick
main set
2 x 100 on 2:00 find pace right at or just slightly under 1:30/100
then swim
12 x 100 holding best avg pace on 1:45
200 easy c/d

Probably one of the best swims I've ever had.
All 12 of the 100 repeats were in the 1:16-1:18 range save for the 9th, 11 and 12th repeats which were 1:21, 1:15 and 1:13, respectively.

I have to think that all this forced rest from running is paying dividends in speed. I just hope I haven't lost too much endurance come the run next weekend...or that I am peaking too early since I started having to force rest a few weeks ago.

Saturday, March 17th

My car got broken into last night. Goodbye iPod. Goodbye cell phone. Luck of the Irish grandmother I had. Fucking Irish.

I swam at Dad's Club this morning. I went there to do a wetsuit swim. Usually the water is a little chillier than what you find elsewhere in town. Not this morning. We had a cool front move through last night and I think they got a little overzealous with the heaters.

Anyway the set went like this here:

600 w/u (easy swimming, adjusting wetsuit throughout to get comfy-I need lots of room for my shoulders and upper arms)
8 x 100 on 1:30..first few were sub 1:20 (amazing) but I settled nicely into 1:25 pace with five seconds rest on each
30 seconds rest
800 first half easy/second half steady (I had to stop at 400 to get some more shoulder room as I was already getting shoulder fatigue)
30 sec rest
stripped wetsuit because I was getting HOT
2 x 400 descending on 10 sec rest
200 cool down

Drive to Brookshire (43 minutes pool to clip-in)

Bike ride:
Big south wind today
15 min w/u
2 hours at 190-210
10 easy
20 min at 210-230
5 easy

Bike ride went well. It warmed up quickly to about 75 degrees by the ride's end and I experienced very little problem overheating in my new Rudy Project Syton helmet. Nutrition went well. I am dialing this in nicely.

To add insult to injury, my back hatch on my Tahoe imploded, literally, out of nowhere half way home. Nothing hit it. Nothing could have. Anyway, the inside of my truck is covered in glass.

How do you like my neighbor's gutter system? Pretty efficient.

Friday, March 16th

For the first time in weeks I ran more than one mile this morning. I ran 1.5 miles.

Over the past few weeks the soreness/tightness/pain in my Achilles has become somewhat normalized. I think this could be good and/or bad. For one, I am accustomed to it. It doesn't bother me as much anymore when I am running. On the other hand, it could mean that I am passively ignoring an injury so I can nurture my ego and fitness instead of my Achilles.

I honestly think I am somewhere in between these two scenarios. In the end, I cn run a half marathon on my heel. It might be slow and painful, but it isn't like I can't walk.

I have two weeks. More of the same until then.

What has become of me? Day off Monday. Ended up not being able to swim Tuesday night (work). I was supposed to run but didn't. Decided to do it after the trainer ride this morning, but I only got three out of five intervals in before my Achilles acted up.

Did not make Thursday night Masters.

Friday: 30 minute spin.

Saturday:
200 w/u in wetsuit.
------------------
3 x 200 on 3:05
5 x 200 on 3:00 (last two in this set were 10 and 7 seconds fast, each)
3 x 200 on 2:55 (last 200 was 12 second late to the wall)
------------------
200 c/d
------------------
2.6K meters at Dad's Club

Ride:
4 x 30 min at 200-220 on 10 recos after 20 min w/u
The first two intervals went very well.
The third interval involved a yellow jacket stinging me on my right thigh. It fucking hurt. And it fucking hurt to cycle. Everytime I spun I felt my shorts rubbing the sting. It fucking hurt. So I stopped. Call me a pussy? Fuck you. It hurt.
Data tomorrow.
I was pissed.

"Crazy people livin' under a rock...don't know 'Wings'....I LOVE 'Wings'!"

A lot of people are familiar with this clip, well those in my ring of friends are. What people don't usually notice is that Joe (second from the left, and a crippled cop) keeps shoving his legs below the water...errr....beer...because they're hanging out at a local brewery late night...I digress. The show is greantess. And the ridiculous number of layers of humor they can put into one scene can be incredible, thus the link above. Lots going on.

Now back to my day's title. This Achilles shit is really bothering me. I went down to Galveston to check out the bike course. Windy. Flat. About what I expected. Galveston is ugly, no two ways around it. All morning I was having a lot of trouble not being out on the road with my friends, having elected to drive the SAG wagon instead.

I want to run. I want to bike. I can't. I can however swim so I am going to go over to the Y later to swim, stretch, steam and shower. I want to take it easy and have a nice long set. Wish me luck.

To be homest, I don't feel this tendon getting any healthier despite my healthy diet of cortisone, rest and stretching.

And in the early morning when I am cranky about not feeling better, watching Family Guy makes me happy.

For example, one of my favorite scenes ever, and strikingly similar to what it is like to deal with, on any level, some of my coworkers...

Wednesday, February 28th

I went to see Dr. Ron Soefer yesterday about my foot. Achilles tendonitis. Doesn't sound like much. Feels like a lot though.

Anyway he gave me some cortisone and suggested some rest. Rock on.

Then I got a massage today. Cheryl Francisco is a good massage therapist but she is pricey pricey. Anyway she showed me just how ridiculously tight my entire lower half is, not to mention my neck, shoulders and lower back.

There was pretty much nothing she could touch below my waist that didn't cause me some major discomfort. Not surprisingly I had the most amount of tightness in my calves. Wow. That was unpleasant. I feel more loose but I think I will need to visit a masseuse again soon.

I went swimming this evening. Good to workout again. Lots of one-foot flip turns. Easy 1500 yards. Whitney got in the pool for the first time since October. I think she meant July.

Anyway, hopefully things will be back to normal soon...hopefully.

I have issues.

I went to the Weekly YMCA this morning to swim Masters. I got out of the pool after 400 meters.

Yesterdy my achilles tendon (or some tendon underneath it) was tight and pretty sore. Today it is so tight I wonder how I am going to make it at work today. I incurred pretty significant pain just pushing off the wall. I almost feel like I should wear running shoes to work for the extra support.

Good segue, I'll be swtiching back to my Gel Nimbus' for the rest of training until race day.

Anway, I am sitting here icing my right foot and hoping that this will pass.

I am headed to a podiatrist and to a massage therapist today hopefully.

P.S.

The weather ROCKED today as did my new jersey! Style is everything in triahtlon, no?

Sunday, February 25th

I had a rough go of it this weekend. First of all, my home pool was still closed on Saturday morning. When I called my fall back, the group was already 45 minutes into their Masters class. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Today's brick called for a warmup, then 5 x 20 minutes at 220-240 watts on 10 minutes rest. Then a one hour run steady at 155-165 HR then 15 minutes easy.

Here is the ride data.

I don't usually write this much about experiences within a training session, but this is a day that needs some explaining.

I warmed up with a group of friends, all strong cyclists. After about twenty minutes of chatting and warming up, I set out from the rest of the group. Good first interval. They caught me in my first recovery period. As they were exchaning pulls, they moved on and built a lead on me until the beginning of my second interval. I noticed I was keeping a steady distance between them and myself-again, even though they were exchanging pulls and I was alone, by myself in no man's land-this gave me some confidence.

I was really pleased with the way things were going, especially when I ended up passing them and leaving_them_in_the_dust on my third and fourth intervals. I was feeling really good until the 9th minute of my fourth interval, when I started getting some stomach issues (like coming back up, not trying to shove its way out). They went from "oh, gosh" to "holy shit" in about 30 seconds. Little vomit. Don't know why, just a little thick spit up. After a couple of minutes I wasn't feeling better and so I started doubting my fifth interval.

As you can see above, the data is good for each 20 minute interval. The problem? I knew I didn't have a fifth one in me if I was going run the hour at 155-165 HR. But what if my ankle acts up and I can't finish my hour run? Wouldn't I have cut my ride short in vain? Probably, but I figured it was more important to (a) get the run in (b) test the ankle and (c) practice bike-to-longish-run nutrition. Moreover, my first four intervals were all pretty good...until I trailed a bit into the end of my fourth interval.

Anyway I decided to park the bike and lace up the running shoes. I went out fast...easy, Jimmy. Settled into a good pace and hit three miles at about 26 minutes-168 AVG HR thru 3 miles.

Phuck! 31 minutes into a run I would normally be proud of, my ankle started to really hurt. Sharp pain, unlike the dull pain I have been recently experiencing. Yes, I was beginning to experience some cramping in my vastus medialis (inner head) (ok, it's that muscle just above the knee cap to the inside of the upper leg). But I felt I could have pulled it back a bit and still been within the perscribed HR zone, hopefully reducing the cramping. Unfortunately, I was unable to do it and, fearing the worst for my ankle if I were to continue, I bailed on the run and drove home a bit disappointed. A bit, not too much.

Good ride...good run. They were just both cut short.

It's now 5:27PM and wifey and I are enjoying some champagne. It's pink. But I have to admit it's pretty good.

I need to drink some MUSCLE ARMOR. Which I am now obsessed with. And if you all are lucky I'll snap some photos of the garage project from the weekend.

Thanks for e-mails wishing me well with the ankle. I'll keep everyone updated. Seeing a friend's father, a podiatrist, next week as a precaution.

Sunday, February 18th

Sunday's long ride was really pleasant. Not tired like I thought I would be given Saturday's training. Got a good long warm up in. Took it easy through the first couple of intervals but hit my marks. And to top it all off, the weather was superb...finally!

I tried my aero helmet to make sure it was comfortable. It breathes quite well. I noticed a difference in the way it "rode" relative to my normal road helment, in particular, when looking down. Air seems to flow more smoothly across it. Naturally it seemed to make the most difference when I got my speeds up above 23-24 MPH.

Thursday, February 15th

This morning's trainer ride was ugly and I am left feeling less-than-confident. The plan was to ride 6 x 2:30 at 310-320 watts on 3 minute recos then to ride 15 minutes at 210-220 then to run 2 miles.

I woke up feeling very dehydrated (likely from travel) and a little feverish. I hopped on and gave myself a five minute warm up and then when into my first interval. WOW it was hard to push the gears this morning. My legs were on_fire and I found myself really laboring to sping the crank arms at the perscribed wattage. By the end of the 2:30 my heart rate had skyrocketed to 169. Good I thought, that's the point of the workout. But I also felt like I was overexerting myself. Maybe that was the point too.

Second interval...holy shit. I could hardly breathe for the last 45 seconds. I felt as close to drowning as I ever want to feel.

Third interval...ok I can't go on at this level. I was able to keep at 300 watts for 1:35 or so and then I decided to back off. I decided 290-300 was a better level. When I tried to spin back up, I had nothing. Nothing.

Fearing a lot of different things, I decided to back out of the workout all together and will hydrate all day in prep for tonight's swim, which I hope goes well.

Awful.

Notice any trends here? Too many oops's. I was feeling good though. Despite some physical pain in my knees caps I was feeling like I could have kept running if I needed to. That doesn't mean I wasn't happy when it was over, just that I felt alright through the entire set.

4 hour ride tomorrow. Hopefully it warms up a bit. This morning's run was downright cold.

500 straight moderate swim
50 easy
4 x 125 swim - (easy, hard, easy, hard)

5 x 100 IM no rest dropping one stroke each, all free last 100
6 x 50 - (one 50 easy, one 50 hard)

I hope everyone knows that "K" is not kilometers but instead is a reference to 4,100 YARDS. It's like "Y2K". No one ever thought that meant "Year 2,000 meters"...right? There's a difference.

Thursday, February 8th

Good news and bad news. Bad news? I didn't get my workout done yesterday. Just didn't. No excuse. More bad news? Guess whose PT doesn't pick up HR again. Yeah, mine.

Good news? This morning's workout went off nicely. Although you won't see it in the PT data below, my HR was really high this morning, which was a stark contrast to yesterday's seemingly low/inaccurate HR measurements. My HR got up into the low 170's late into some of the intervals. It easily hit 161-162 in all but the first two.

As for reporting my workout, we're going to try a little something new today. In an effort to try to make my PT data more legible, I have created a jpeg file that I will upload to the blog. Just click on the image below to enlarge it. I have left out the 3:00 rests in between each two minute interval at 290-320 watts to save room. I also deleted the Peak 5, 10, 20 and 30 measurements.

The last interval is a little sub 290 because I was trying to go on feel and ended up a bit short. Oh well, I was close. Cadence was super low today.

Here it goes:

Wednesday, February 7th

I had some issues this AM. First, I was riding along on the trainer and after 8 minutes at 220 watts my heart rate had not risen above 138. It was just sitting there, not budging an inch. I road three more minutes...nothing. I felt like I was going to keel over but my HR would not rise to the 155 requirement I needed to then back off. Then suddenly, I felt the VERY urgent need to use the restroom (thanks Salmon avocado sushi).

We'll try again tonight.

Sunday, February 4th

The ride was long and it was too hard too early. We averaged 22.5MPH from Brookshire to Hempstead, making it 68 minutes from point to point. Even with a slight tailwind that is too hard. It made for a hairy last hour and a half.

Sunday, February 4th

The weather looks to be a little more promising this morning. 0 wind and about 45 degrees once we will start riding. It should warm up too s the sun is out today. It's amazing how much effect the weather can have on my demeanor.

If it rains tonight in Miami, which the weathermen are predicting it will for the first time in Super Bowl history, then I say the Bears by two touchdowns. If it doesn't rain too bad then I say Colts by a touchdown. I just think the Bears are a tougher team and they have a pair of backs that will grind Indy's run defense.

I'll DL my PT data tomorrow at work and post it then. 4 hour ride today.

Saturday, February 3rd

F*ck!ng local CBS affiliate (is that redundant) would rather air infomercials than air the XTERRA World Championships. Why would CBS spend ten, possibly hundreds, of thousands of dollars to fly a crew to Hawaii, film the event, produce it, edit it, lay a soundtrack, and then NOT show it in the fourth largest city in America? It's beyond me.

This morning's 12 mile run at Memorial Park (I ran true 3 mile loops) was a little eratic. Let's take a look at the splits:

Mile 1 8:30 AVG HR 147
Mile 2 8:00 AVG HR 153
Mile 3 8:15 AVG HR 160
Mile 4 8:30 AVG HR 155
Mile 5 8:30 AVG HR 158
Mile 6 8:20 AVG HR 158
Mile 7 8:15 AVG HR 161
Mile 8 8:20 AVG HR 164
Mile 9 8:10 AVG HR 165
Mile 10 7:00 AVG HR 168
Mile 11 7:50 AVG HR 170
Mile 12 7:45 AVG HR 171

Overall I was pleased but I felt like that first mile was going to be 9:15, not 8:30. That was a little alarming in that I thought I may have blown myself up. But all is well that ends well I suppose. Yesterday's day off certainly allowed my legs to recover from Thursday's bike/swim volume. I finished running at 11:20 or so this morning so I should have plenty of time to recover before I ride 4 hours with Justin and Biff tomorrow morning, starting at about the same time I did this morning, 9-9:30. This will be an interesting ride and I hope it goes well. I will be trying some new sodium/magnesium pills to see if it eases the cramping Ive been experiencing as of late.

Cheers,

Jimbo

Getting sleep is a good thing.

Getting some good coffee after a good night sleep is almost better.

Masters:

Damn it was a long day.

February 1, 2007

This morning's workout went MUCH better than expected. Having left the office at 8:30 last night I was a little tired. I_am_going_to_drink_water_all_day_today before tonight's masters workout. I think Bart will be joining us tonight.

I also think I am going to have tea and strumpets this afternoon. If I feel like I'm living in England, I might as well live like it.

I did some research this morning and found out that Houston, historically, gets 3.1 inches of rainfall ever January. According to Weather Underground Houston got 5.36 inches in January 2007. That is a 72.9% increase over the normal. And February is off to a good start. Thank God for trainers. Speaking of...

Let me say that if you take off the first three to four seconds on each of these 1 minute, 30 second intervals then the AVG PWR readings get to about 293-300. So these numbers are ever so slightly low.

Wednesday, January 31st

I am tired today.

January Totals
Swim: 18.5K
Bike: 152.21 miles
Run: 32.25 miles

Given that it was a truncated month in terms of # of days of training I am happy with the volume. The bike/swim volume is up considerabely. February will be a good month.

I really don't know how to report this morning's trainer ride except to provide you with a graph of the wattage/HR data.

Monday, January 29th

This morning I ran on the treadmill at the Y and then stretched on the "stretching machine" for about 15 minutes. I ran 3.4 miles in 28 minutes and then had a two minute cool down.

Let's talk about yesterday. In what was easily the coldest/windiest conditions I've ever ridden in I had one of the strongest cycling days I've ever had. Remember last week when I said "I averaged 180 watts for the ride" and was really happy? Well yesterday we averaged 190 watts and yesterday we had some sections that were much much much easier than we had last week. Translation? Some really hard sets yesterday.

We had a suicidal warm up that involved catching a group of cyclists that had begun about 8 minutes before us, moving into a headwind. Second, we hammered it pretty hard from the 359/529 intersection all the way into Bellville. Third, we hit it equally hard between San Felipe and Pattison on the way home.

It was a hard day and I'll thank Mr. Daerr for allowing to suck his wheel all day. Even though I was drafting, the watts don't lie, so I'll let you read them. Check out the best averages for 30min and 60min. Those are big numbers for me. Like HUGE.

If you had told me before our ride that I would have peak 20, 30 and 60 min readings of over 210 watts, each, I would have probably laughed at you. That's probably why Justin said, "just stick to my wheel and don't worry about anything else. hang on."
